Union Pacific’s Living Legend
Come along for a look at the only steam locomotive never retired by a Class I railroad in the U.S., Union Pacific 4-8-4 #844.
Our program begins with a look at vintage Union Pacific passenger power, and the 800 series 4-8-4s in their prime in the forties and fifties. Following steam’s retirement, the very last steam locomotive purchased by the U.P., FEF-3 class #844, was kept on for occasion use on excursions.
We begin in 1989, the last year the locomotive ran as #8444 to clear the way for the 800 series GP30s. By 1990, the diesel was gone and the steam locomotive was back with her original number as #844.
The footage for this program was shot over the course of 27 years from 1989 to 2016. In 1989 and 1990, the locomotive wore the two-tone gray paint that adorned many of the 4-8-4s (and a few 4-6-6-4 Challengers) in the late forties and early fifties. By 1996, she was back in her accustomed black attire.
Over the years, #844 is seen in action in Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas.
Union Pacific calls her the Living Legend, and this action-packed DVD presents nearly two hours of the legendary locomotive’s travels.
