STRAINING STALLING DIESELS 1960sA one hour audio CD of sound recorded in real time throughout the 1960's. The sequences (tracks) on this CD were taken from a library of over 1000 hours of preserved and cataloged audio from this era. This particular CD program “STRAINING STALLING DIESELS 1960s” was recorded in the 1960s decade before all of the high tech, high horsepower, “cookie cutter” diesel locomotives of today. This program is dedicated to these early first and second generation diesel locomotives and their often heroic efforts to move heavy trains under challenging conditions. The tracks on the program are as follows:
Track 1: We are near Cresson, PA where we catch a pair of then new SD40s on an empty coal train. The train eastbound on the west slope pulls up to a stop signal. When she gets the clear and tries to start the train she stalls as one of the SD40s has shut down. Then they restart the 2nd SD40 and this time the attempt to get the train rolling is successful.
Track 2: We are in the Deerfield valley near the east portal of the Hoosac Tunnel. We hear a WB B&M freight with 4 GP9s as she tries to get rolling upgrade after having stopped in Soapstone siding for a meet. It takes a couple of attempts to get the train rolling upgrade.
Track 3: We are on the Delaware and Hudson’s Richmondville Hill southbound grade and we catch 5 new Alco RS11s as they stall with a heavy train. After bunching the train, they manage to get them rolling again.
Track 4: We are on the B&O at Sand Patch and we catch a freight with and F7 and 3 GP40s as she stalls. After some effort they get rolling again.
Track 5: We are at Zoar, MA on the Boston and Maine and we catch a WB drag with F7/4GP9/F7 making a run up the last grade to the Hoosac after leaving a siding.
Track 6: We are on the Pennsy East slope at MG Tower where we hear a WB freight pounding upgrade with U28C/U25C/U25C making a run for the top with U28C/U28C helperset. The sound of the helpers barking up the grade is unforgettable.
Track 7: We are once again on the B&O near Sand Patch grade and we hear ABBBA F7s roaring up the grade. They are accelerating away from a stop signal.
Track 8: We are at the Horseshoe Curve and we catch a WB freight climbing upgrade with 3 GP40s and no helpers. The locomotives come to a stall just east of the curve. After getting rear end helpers from Altoona she gets rolling again.
Track 9: We are at the Galllitzin tunnels (south side) and we catch a coal drag coming up the Holidaysburg branch. (the muleshoe) with F7A/F7B/3 GP9s/ F7A. She stalls about 500 yards south of the point where the branch ducks under the slide. Incredibly after a few minutes she gets her rolling again, and stalls again. Then she gets rolling yet again and this time they grind all the way to the Gallitzin tunnels at about 1/2 mile an hour.
If you are a fan of early diesels pulling hard then this is the CD program for you.
