RIDING GG-1s ON THE FORMER NEW HAVENA 60 minute CD of sound recorded in real time on the former New Haven Main line from New haven, CT and New York City (Penn Station). As the GG-1s aged and merger fever gripped the northeast railroad scene the survivors became hand me downs. First to Penn Central, then Conrail and finally Amtrak and New Jersey transit.
Although Amtrak acquired their GG 1s for continued service on the Northeast Corridor, many of them found work pulling Amtrak passenger trains on the former New haven’s electrified lines.
A good friend of mine who worked for Penn Central, Conrail and then Amtrak at Wilmington Electric shop, managed a cab ride on the Montrealer from Penn Station to New Haven, and then returned to New York on another unnamed Amtrak train. This particular CD entitled RIDING GG-1s ON THE FORMER NEW HAVEN is the result of that trip.
Track 1: Amtrak’s Montrealer a 12 car train powered by Amtrak GG-1 number 4932. 4932 started out life in Altoona Works as PRR 4909 in 1941. Recorded from the fireman’s side this track covers the run from Rye, NY to Stamford, CT.
Track 2: This track is a continuation of 4932’s Montrealer covering the run from Stamford, CT to Bridgeport, CT.
Track 3: This track covers the Montrealer’s run from Bridgeport, CT to New Haven. Historical note 4932 is a survivor and is owned by the Leatherstocking Chapter of the NRHS.
.Track 4: This last track is a compilation of clips from the return trip from New Haven to New York City on an unnamed Amtrak night train. This 10 car train is pulled by Amtrak 910. The 910 began life as PRR 4910 in 1942 and unfortunately is not a survivor, having been scrapped.
If you are a fan of GG-1s or the New Haven is the program for you..It is as if you are in the cab storming down New Haven's "Shoreline" route.
