Most of these steam stars reside on Today’s Cumbres & Toltec & Durango & Silverton while the rest are scattered across Colorado & other states. It was narrated by Bob carerra.
In Volume 2 which was originally released on VHS only in 1994, there are lots of vintage films from steam in normal service to today’s excursion stars with clips from the East Broad Top, New York Central Odyssey, Union Pacific Odyssey with a couple of challengers & never retired northern 844 as 8444, The Nickel Plate & the Akron Canton & Youngstown (note the Berkshire numbered after a Lake Superior & Ishpeming 2-8-0 on the Western Maryland Scenic railroad as well as a couple of clips of 767 in freight service before the number boards on the engine were saved & owned by the crew of 765, not to mention Reading 2102), the Chama turn, Rotary on the Rio Grande Narrow Gauge with snowplow OM, the Pennsylvania railroad, Chicago Odyssey with Grand Trunk Western 6330, 5629 (scrapped in 1987 by Metra commuter rail), 4070 (still in pieces today), & CB&Q 5632 which both scenes of this engine was later used in Volume 7 of this series, The Rock Island line with Southern 4501 (clips from the engine’s 1973 trip was later used in 4501: 3 decades of excursions from 1997), & Erie Lackawanna with Reading 2102 as Delaware & Hudson 302 (clips of the T1 as a D&H northern was later used in Twilight of steam from 1995, & the Susquehanna along the Southern Tier from 2000). It was narrated by Dan Chandler.
In volume 3 which was originally released in 1995, there are clips of diesels (mostly EMD E & F units, with some Alcos) in regular passenger service from these other Green Frog titles: California Zephyr-the ultimate fan trip (that program has music, while this volume has authentic sounds only, not to mention the cab ride portion that was also used on Trains Trains Trains for Kids with KC Frog the puppet), Santa Fe Odyssey, Chicago Odyssey (which some clips of the Burlington route that also has 5632 was later used in volume 7 of this series), Rio Grande Odyssey, Colorado Narrow gauge passenger chase, & Union Pacific Odyssey with 844 as 8444 (that also has clips from part 2 of the Top Frog Series). This is one of the few volumes to be narrated by Dan Chandler.
In volume 4 which was originally released on VHS only in 1997, there are lots of diesels in eastern America from various Green Frog titles: The Pennsylvania Railroad, New York Central Odyssey with a few Hudsons in action as well as a visit from western & Atlantic 4-4-0 number 3, Erie Lackawanna, Santa Fe Odyssey, the Rock Island Line, Chicago Odyssey with an appearance by Grand Trunk Western 6330 that was also used in volume 2 of the Top Frog Series, St. Louis Sojurn, Detroit Passenger trains, the Penn Central collection, & even clips that was later used in B&O Odyssey parts 1 & 2 by Pentrex. This volume like part 1 of the Top Frog collection, is narrated by Bob Carrera.
In volume 5 which was not only released on VHS only in 1998, but also the longest program in the Top Frog series, there are lots of diesels on almost each & every fallen flag road name from these clips: Santa Fe Odyssey, Rio Grande Odyssey, the Wabash Railroad, Union Pacific Odyssey, Detroit Passenger Trains, the Rock Island Line, the Erie Lackawanna, the Nickel Plate Road & the Akron Canton & Youngstown, Chicago Odyssey (note the cameo appearance of Grand Trunk Western 4-6-2 5629 during the Soo Line segment), Michigan Fast Freights, the Pennsylvania railroad, & New York Central Odyssey. Not to mention Top Frog parts 3 & 4, plus some scenes that were later used in B&O Odyssey parts 1 & 2 by Pentrex, as well as Top Frog volume 7: the Chicago Burlington & Quincy & even Top Frog part 8: the best of the B&O. The music throughout the program was not only used in Northeast Vintage Diesels, & for a tiny bit in the opening logo of Steam Giants Across America, but also in the Scenic Trains of BC rail by Greg Scholl. This is the only volume to have 2 narrators: Bob Carrera, & Bill Rodriguez.
In Volume 6 which was not only released on VHS only in 1998, but also the shortest volume in the Top Frog Series, there is a bunch of Rio Grande Narrow Gauge action just like in part 1 of the series, but here, the action is on the already ripped up Chama to Durango line with clips from Chama Freight Turn, Twilight of the Rio Grande, Colorado Narrow Gauge Passenger Chase, & of course, the very first volume of the series. Most of the steam locomotives seen in this program are now part of Today’s Cumbres & Toltec & Durango & Silverton. Like Volumes 1, 4, & 5, this is narrated by Bob Carrera.
In volume 7 of the Top Frog Series which like parts 5 & 6 were also released on VHS only in 1998, there is a parade of steam & diesel action on this fallen flag railroad that is now part of today’s BNSF with clips from other Green Frog titles: California Zephyr-The Ultimate Fan Trip (with music included in this volume than part 3), Chicago Odyssey, Top Frog Volumes 3 & 5, the Penn Central series, and Santa Fe Odyssey. There are also exclusive vintage film clips of northern 5632 (since been scrapped), & the now preserved Mikado 4960 which is still at Arizona’s Grand Canyon Railway. Like volumes 1, 4, 5, & 6, This is narrated by Bob Carrera. In the closing credits, the piece of music was not only used on the southern pacific cab forward collection by pentrex, but also on Greg Scholl’s Illinois junctions part 2. While most of the Top Frog series ran for nearly a full hour, this program ran for only 45 minutes while part 5 of the series ran for 73 minutes, & part 6 for only 35 minutes.
And finally In volume 8 which was made around the time that this boxset was made, this program contains not only clips from both Volumes of B&O Odyssey by Pentrex, but also scenes from Classic Steam of the 20s to 40s, Steam in the 50s volume 1, Rails in Transition, 1960s passenger, steam, & electric trains, Northeast Vintage Diesels, St. Louis Sojurn, the Penn Central series, & many more highlights leading up to freight operations in the modern era on Chessie System, Seaboard, & CSX. There are countless footages by not only Emery Gulash, but also Jerry Carson, Steve Neff, Frank Schlegal, Gene Miller, Bill McClellan, & Roger Koenig.
This final volume of the series has lots of narrators than any other Green Frog Productions title, Dan Chandler, Bob Carrera, Peter Youngblood, & Bill Rodriguez.
