PHILADELPHIA — Eagles running back Saquon Barkley improved his chances of winning MVP during Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers.
In the fourth quarter, Barkley broke the Eagles’ single-season rushing record of 1,607 yards that was set by running back LeSean McCoy in 2013. Barkley has rushed for 124 yards against the Panthers, including a nine-yard carry to pass McCoy’s number.
Barkley has been the most impactful player on the Eagles’ talented offense. After the Week 5 bye, the Eagles became a run-heavy team to fix their offensive problems. Through 13 weeks, Philadelphia’s run offense ranked No. 1 in the NFL, averaging 188.9 yards per game.
During his six-year stint with the New York Giants, Barkley didn’t have as much success because he played behind a porous offensive line and with average playmakers. He also dealt with injuries.
Now, he has become one of the NFL’s best players for a Super Bowl contender.
Barkley has made critical plays in the Eagles’ last two victories. Last week, he rushed for a 25-yard touchdown during the fourth quarter of the Eagles’ 24-19 win over the Baltimore Ravens, giving them a nine-point lead (21-19).
In the Eagles’ Week 12 win over the Los Angeles Rams, Barkley rushed for two 70-plus yard touchdowns during the second half.
